What is the French Gemmology Laboratory?

The French Gemmology Laboratory (LFG) is the oldest gemmological laboratory in the world. Founded in 1929 by the Diamond Trade Association, it has been affiliated with the Union BJOP (French Union of Jewellery, Gold and Silversmithing, Stones and Pearls) since 2011. Its main mission is to appraise gems to inform consumers.

The French Gemmology Laboratory makes it a point of honour that every report issued is based on a rigorous scientific analysis. It is also the only laboratory in France to offer scientifically-based analyses for diamonds, gems, coloured stones and pearls. Certifications issued by the LFG are recognised worldwide for their reliability and security, which explains why major jewellery houses, such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet and Boucheron, trust it to guarantee the authenticity and quality of their precious stones.

Founded and operating according to the National Expert Appraisal Charter, the LFG also complies with the recommendations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. This laboratory is completely independent, thus guaranteeing the objectivity and neutrality of its expert appraisals.

This approach allows us to best guarantee the quality and authenticity of our stones. Although systematic analysis of every stone or pearl is impossible due to high costs, this regular appraisal protocol constitutes a reliable control. It helps to reinforce transparency with our suppliers and maintain the trust of our customers.
