What is the French Gemmology Laboratory?

The Laboratoire français de gemmologie (LFG) is the oldest gemmology laboratory in the world. Founded in 1929 by the Chambre syndicale du diamant, it has been affiliated with Union BJOP (French Union of Jewellery, Gold and Silversmiths, Stones and Pearls) since 2011. Its primary mission is to appraise gemstones to inform consumers.

The Laboratoire français de gemmologie prides itself on ensuring that every report it produces is based on a rigorous scientific analysis. It is also the only laboratory in France to offer scientifically-based analyses for diamonds, gemstones, coloured stones, and pearls. Certifications issued by the LFG are globally recognised for their reliability and security, which is why major jewellery houses such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet, and Boucheron trust it to guarantee the authenticity and quality of their precious stones.

Founded and operating according to the National Expert Charter, the LFG also complies with the recommendations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. This laboratory is entirely independent, thus guaranteeing the objectivity and neutrality of its appraisals.

This approach allows us to best guarantee the quality and authenticity of our stones. Although systematic analysis of every stone or pearl is impossible due to high costs, this regular appraisal protocol constitutes a reliable control. It helps to strengthen transparency with our suppliers and maintain the trust of our customers.
